Walt Disney Animation has released just a little info about its next original story, and we might have our first Southeast Asian princess!

Welcome to the mysterious realm of Kumanda, where a warrior named Raya is searching for the last living dragon.

Disney has released the first two cast members in the film:

• Kelly Marie Tran – Raya (the protagonist)
• Awkwafina – Sisu (a water dragon that can transform into a human)

Though the film’s setting is fictional, it draws heavy inspiration from Southeast Asia. The production team visited Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia for research. The film will be directed by Paul Briggs (director Zootopia), Dean Wellins (animator on The Iron Giant), and John Ripa (animator on Frozen).

Raya and the Last Dragon is currently slated for release in March 2021. We can’t wait to see an official trailer!
